Drown Your Inner Child

we wrote our childhood dreams on tiny pieces of paper and put them in a coffee tin. we set them ablaze and danced like savages until the flame couldn't eat any more summer days. until it couldn't stomach another first crush, saturday morning cartoon, or hope that maybe i could be a fireman one day.
we grabbed handfuls of clumsy ash and painted our bodies like ghosts, hoping to find the kids who died with their shoes untied somewhere in the backs of our minds.
and we made fitful lust under a stucco sky of white paint, shaking our bones until our skin begged us to stop.
we laid there, in the crematorium we built, and we prayed for younger days, but we never could remember how the ashes were made.
this is not how days were born. this is not the rib he's torn.
i remember when you came home that day and the lights all flickered in d-minor, and your cigarette hung there like a malignant fuse. you didn't want to remember what the doctor told you and neither did i, so let's sing it one last time.
sing loud, sing proud. sing loud, sing proud. remember, remember.
